Obituary

Lellar Davis Bowman, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, was born on June 15, 1928, in Rock Hill, SC, to Carrie McCright Davis and Isaiah Davis. She peacefully entered eternal rest on April 17, 2025, at Trellis Support Center in Winston Salem, NC, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service. On August 11,1952, she married the love of her life, Arthur G. Bowman. To this union, two children were born, Albert Kenneth and Linda.

Lellar was devoted to ensuring that her family and children knew how much she loved them. She was blessed to be the only girl in a family with five brothers. They affectionately nicknamed her "sister".

Lellar accepted Christ as her savior at a very early age at Flint Hill Baptist Church in Rock Hill, SC. Her Christian journey began with her unwavering faith and her love for Jesus Christ. Her formative years were spent in Rock Hill, SC where she attended grade school and graduated from Emmett Scott High School. After completing high school she attended Friendship Junior College. After one year at Friendship Junior College, she transferred to the prestigious nursing school, Kate Bitting Reynolds School of Nursing in Winston Salem, NC for African American females. While studying at Kate Bitting, she met and later married her husband, Arthur G. Bowman. They were married for 63 years.

Lellar began her nursing career in her hometown of Rock Hill SC. Soon after graduation, she moved to Detroit Michigan to work in nursing. After a few years, she moved back to Winston-Salem, NC and began working as a Registered Nurse for the historic Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital. Throughout her career, she was compassionate, kind, and caring in her professional role.

She worked in numerous hospitals and nursing homes throughout the Triad area. She became a nursing supervisor, instructor, special assignment nurse, neonatal nurse, geriatric nurse specialist, operating room nurse, home healthcare nurse, trainer, and mentor for new professional nurses. Her full nursing career spanned almost 60 years before she would completely retire from nursing. Her determination to make a difference in the lives of those who needed her service and expertise was extraordinary. She was truly a servant leader being led by her quiet sweet spirit and her faith. In her later years, she became the receptionist and administrative assistant for the family businesses, TCAL, The Center for Accelerated Learning, Triad Homes (group home for girls), and ED-CORE, Educational Services. She loved welcoming everyone into the building with a smile and a sincere gesture of love.

As a lifelong resident of Winston Salem and the Castle Heights community, she was a member of several churches in the Triad throughout her faith walk. In her early years, she joined Shiloh Baptist church. Later she joined and served at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church in the nursing ministry. Finally, she became a member of New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church until her health began to decline. She loved her church family and enjoyed her "Sunday Brunch Ladies". On Sunday, she looked forward to the special fellowship after Sunday church service.

On April 17th, God called his faithful servant home. In the scripture, Matthew 28:11 the word reads "Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

Lellar was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur G. Bowman, her parents Isaiah and Carrie Davis, her son, Albert K.Bowman, siblings; Willie "Sonny" Davis, James W. Davis, Solomon Davis, George Davis, sister-in Law's Creola Davis, Martha Davis, Tommie Mae Davis, and Freedonia Davis.
