Larry D. Roberts Sr., 69, of Winston Salem, NC passed away unexpectedly at his home on August 12, 2024. Born on November 9, 1954, in Winston-Salem, NC, Larry was the beloved son of the late Charlie and Eva Mae Roberts.
Larry attended Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Schools and graduated from East Forsyth High School in 1973. Following his graduation, he proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1973 to 1992, having being called back to active duty to serve at Dessert Storm.
Throughout his career, Larry worked at Hunter's Publishing Company, Josten's Publishing Company, and the United States Postal Service, where he retired in 2020.
Larry had a deep love for sports, especially his favorite team, the Dallas Cowboys. However, his greatest joy came from being with his grandchildren. He cherished attending their sports events and picking them up from school. Larry was also a lifelong member of St. John Baptist Church, where his faith was a cornerstone of his life.
With great honor, Larry served as the following: Past Master of Olympic Lodge #795; Grand Inspector General (GIG) 33rd Degree Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemason Prince Hall Affiliation – Southern Jurisdiction; member of King Solomon Consistory #64 and Dr. G. Wesley Allen Council of Deliberation North Carolina.
Larry is survived by his children, Nakia Samuels (Raeshaun), Jarvis Coleman, and Larry Roberts, Jr.; his sister, Judy Roberts; his grandchildren, Christian Davis, Jalen Samuels, Ka'Nijah Roberts, Jacen Samuels, JaNiya Coleman, Larry Roberts, III, and Sirvaj Coleman; his nieces, Monicia Roberts and Shauntaye Roberts; his nephews: Andre Clinton and Kennard Deland Roberts; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Perry; and his childhood friends, Rev. Dr. Clark McGriff and Michael Stroud.
Special recognition goes to East Forsyth High School class of 1973, The HairBear Bunch, and The Dictators Social Club.
Larry aka "Lano" will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of God first, family, friends and fun times will continue to live on in all our hearts.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Russell Funeral Home. Masonic funeral rites will be held at 6:00pm Tuesday, August 20, 2024 at Russell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Wednesday, August 21, 2024 at St. John Baptist Church. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Wednesday at the Church. Interment will be held at 9:00am Thursday, August 22, 2024 in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.
