Obituary

Larry Leon Hamlin was born on September 25, 1948 to Charles Nolan Hamlin, Sr. and Annie Simpson Hamlin, in Reidsville, NC. He died at his home in Pfafftown, NC on June 6, 2007 after a lengthy illness.

Larry Leon was a man of extraordinary vision. More importantly, he was a loving husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a loyal friend to that closely knit inner-circle he acknowledged as "family." He was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church.

In 1979, Larry Leon created the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, the first professional Black Theatre company in North Carolina. Concerned about the future of Black Theatre in the United States, he envisioned a national festival, and made that vision a reality by producing the first National Black Theatre Festival™ in 1989. The Festival, now international, will celebrate its 18th anniversary in 2007.

He received his theatrical training at Brown University (Rhode Island) under the direction of the late George Houston Bass as a member of Rites and Reason Theatre Company. He received a degree in business education at Johnson & Wales University.

Larry Leon was a professional actor, accomplished playwright, director, producer and artistic director, in addition to being the Executive Director of the NC Black Repertory Company.

He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Charles (Richard) Nolan Hamlin, Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife, Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin; one son, Larenté Leon Hamlin; two grandsons, Larenté Angel Hamlin and Ja'Quan James Hamlin; a devoted mother, Annie Hamlin Johnson; a stepfather, Aaron Johnson; two caring sisters, Linda Maxine Moore and Sherrie Darlene Hamlin; an uncle, Ernest Simpson, Jr.; two nephews, Derrick Hamlin (Tracie) and Johnnie (JJ) Cheeks Jr.; two nieces, Ginger Hamlin and Reba Moore; a special friend, Arthur William Henry Sprinkle, III; four special godchildren; and a host of great nephews, great nieces, cousins, in-laws and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1pm Wednesday, June 13, 2007 from the Union Baptist Church, 1200 N. Trade Street, Winston-Salem, NC with Rev. Dr. Sir Walter Mack, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11 am until 1pm on Wednesday at the Church.

He will always be remembered with admiration, respect and love … the applause will never end!
