Obituary

Kathleen Moore Hunt

August 16, 1927 – July 21, 2021

After living a beautiful life dedicated to serving God, Kathleen Moore Hunt peacefully transitioned to be with Jesus on Wednesday, July 21, 2021.

She collected several nicknames over her nearly 94 years, but was most affectionately known as Nonnie. A nickname given to her as a first time grandmother, "Nonnie" was quickly adopted by family and friends as reflective of her sweet, wise, and regal demeanor.  Nonnie had impeccable style but her true worth was in her faith and character. Just as easily as she wore hats for any occasion, she also wore many hats in life. Choir members will remember her piano and organ playing, her beautiful alto voice, and her ability to recall a hymn and its meaning. Education colleagues and students will remember her for believing excellence is possible, as an Art and English teacher or Director of Christian Education for the Winston-Salem District of the A.M.E. Zion Church. Family and friends will remember her ability to quote poems, especially "A Psalm of Life," her ability to infuse art into daily life through sewing, painting and calligraphy writing, and her overall craftiness and creativity, which she shared freely with those around her.

The youngest daughter of the late Henry and Ella Moore, Kathleen was born in Old Fort, North Carolina, on August 16, 1927. Along with her 10 siblings (James, Mary, William, Samuel, Annie, Amos, Essie, Bessie, Ernest, and Albert), she absorbed the values her parents instilled: to love God and commit to family, education, and community impact. Her formative years were spent in Asheville, North Carolina, the place she would consider home. There she met and married the late Reverend James L. Hunt.

Kathleen and Reverend Hunt built a ministry-focused life as they raised their family which included two sons, Reverend Dr. James L. E. Hunt and William H. A. Hunt. They continued their education together, and both graduated from Livingstone College. They also traveled, wrote and produced a musical, "Heaven Bound", and used their home as a space for fellowship, including the first Ella Johnson Moore Family Reunion and weekly family dinners. Kathleen's dedication to the A.M.E. Zion Church was unwavering and consistent throughout her life. She maintained her membership at Goler Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church, yet regularly attended New Birth Worship Center with her son James and devoted daughter-in-law Elvita.

Kathleen found pride in everything she did. She particularly held her role as the wife of a minister with reverence and esteem. At the untimely death of her husband, she gracefully rebuilt her life, adding on new activities such as volunteering with the Democratic Party as a Chief Election Judge and at Reynolda Gardens. She considered herself a businesswoman and owned Kathleen's Unique Shop, a store with antiques and more. Her home continued to be a place of fellowship and celebrating life's milestones, as she hosted weekly family dinners that always included "veggies and cream rice", baby showers, Ideal Club Meetings, and choir rehearsals for the J. L. Hunt Choir, which she founded.

Despite her active life, being Nonnie was her greatest pride. She was a supportive mother and grandmother in every part of life. Whether at the CIAA Tournament, in Hilton Head, or having a Sunday visit, Nonnie was present, engaged, and delightful. In her transition to Heaven, Nonnie left precious gifts to her family including countless experiences together. Towards the end of life, as her memory and ability to communicate declined, she never failed to light up around her family and clap her hands to her favorite hymnals giving her beloved family the greatest gift of all; the final assurance of her love for Jesus.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents, Ella and Henry Moore, her husband, Rev. Dr.  James L. Hunt, a beloved daughter-in-law Rev. Conita A. Hunt, five brothers and four sisters. Those who will miss her and yet find peace in knowing Heaven is a place of family reunions include her sons, Rev. Dr. James L. E. (Elvita) Hunt and William H. A. (Brenda) Hunt, a brother Albert (Peulah) Moore, 6 grandchildren, LaShonda (Natrone) Means, James (Kim) Hunt II, Willonda (Eric) Thomas, Rev. Reginald (Julie) Hunt, Robin (James) Ingram, and Marcus (Shannon) Hunt, 17 Great-Grandchildren, Callie Ellison, a family friend who was like an adopted son, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Celebration of Life for Kathleen will be held graveside at Evergreen Cemetery on Monday, August 2, 2021 at 11am (there will be no public viewing). Friends and family are welcome to attend; please wear a mask.
