Mrs. Katherine Harrell Spease, 93, departed life peacefully on Wednesday, October 03, 2012 at Forsyth Medical Center in the presence of her family. She moved to Winston-Salem as a young child from Hartsville, SC. She spent several years caring for several members of her family. Later, in life she worked many years and retired from the retail department of Goodwill Industries.
She was a faithful member of St. James AME Church and a member of the Usher Board for at least 40 years. Later, in life, her illness prevented her from fully participating in church activities.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Annie Terry and Rosie Lee Cannon; and three brothers, Carl Richardson, Eugene Harrell, and James Harrell.
Mrs. Spease is survived by one daughter, Gwendolyn Spease Sanders (Dr. Frederick D.) of Memphis, TN; two grandchildren, Frances Donna and Aletha Gayle of Memphis, TN; two great- grandchildren; three nieces; one nephew; several cousins and other relatives; she is also survived by a very dear friend, companion, and care giver, Mr. Joseph Manigault.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon, Monday, October 8, 2012 St James AME Church, 1501 Patterson Ave. with Rev. Steven Lyons officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 12noon on Monday at the church.
