Obituary

Rev. Justus "Jack" Rufus Martin, Sr., 94, was born on June 13, 1914 to Hugh and Latha Warren Martin in Forsyth County. He made his heavenly transition on Sunday, January 25, 2009 at Forsyth Medical Center following a very brief illness. Rev. Martin was an Associate Minister at Rock Hill Baptist Church, Walnut Cove, NC where he was a lifelong member. He served in several capacities at Rock Hill, of which the closest to his heart being the ministering to the sick and shut in members of the community in nursing homes, hospitals and their homes.

Rev. Martin was a retired employee of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and the Forsyth County School system. He was a member of the Red Rock Masonic Lodge #809, PHA where he previously served as Past Master.

Rev. Martin was the devoted and loving husband of Alberta Campbell Martin for sixty-nine years until her death on August 30, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his parents; three sons, Norris Dean Martin, Elvin Ray Martin, and Justice (Jackie) Rufus Martin; and two sisters, Clara Chandler and Vera Chandler.

His survivors include a devoted daughter, Camille Martin Graves of Winston Salem, a son, Herman Wayne Martin of the home; a loving sister, Mrs. Lenora Eldridge of Jacksonville, FL; five grandchildren, Joseph DeMarcus "Joey" Graves, LaMonte Terrell "Terry)"Martin, LaKeisha Martin, and Denise Martin of Winston Salem, NC; and Derrick (Michelle) Martin of Atlanta, GA; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Norvella Simmons of Walkertown, NC; two daughters-in-law, Julia Burns Martin and Vernell M. Martin of Winston Salem, NC; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

A celebration of the life and legacy of Reverend Martin will be held at 12Noon Saturday, January 31, 2009 from the Rock Hill Baptist Church, Walnut Cove, NC with Reverend John Hairston officiating and Reverend Ira L. Anthony eulogist. Interment with full Masonic rites will be held in the family plot of the Rock Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will meet with friends at 7pm on Friday evening, January 30, 2009 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
