June B. Ragins, 87, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed on June 11, 2017 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home surrounded by family and friends. She was born June 9, 1930, to the late Sadie and Jones Broadway. She was the oldest of six siblings. She was married to the late Marion Lawson Ragins, for over 50 years.
She graduated from Atkins High School at the age of 14, as a result of having accomplished all grade levels at record speed. She wanted to pursue a career in the medical field and worked for over 35 years at Forsyth Hospital, aka Novant, in various roles as a clinical professional within the medical laboratory. The majority of her time there was spent in the Dept. of Microbiology, where she examined modes of existence of microscopic organisms.
She had a love for growing roses and tulips, cats, jazz music, theater, art, tennis, and swimming. She also had exquisite taste for good books and beautiful furniture, bedding, china, crystal, designer clothes, and Ferragamo shoes. She was also an avid member of the YMCA, and enjoyed cooking, socializing, and having picnic excursions to Tanglewood Park with her family. June also enjoyed going to church to worship and hear the Word of God.
June was loved by many, especially by Marilyn, her oldest daughter, who took on the difficult initiative of taking care of her mother for almost 10 years. Marilyn never lost faith in God while being the caregiver for an aging parent living with Alzheimer's. Marilyn attributes her ability to overcome the difficulties through God's grace and her unwavering love for June. She was June's "angel," sent from God, and the family is grateful for her sacrifice and commitment to ensuring June's final years were spent in the comforts of her home. June's other daughter Cheryl, became June's caregiver when she was first diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
June loved Jesus, and by example, taught her children the Word of God. June also taught them to pursue a life of excellence and higher education, which she believed are key to unleashing unlimited opportunities.
June leaves a legacy of service and love for those she left behind. She is survived by two sisters, Helen Broadway of Winston-Salem and Ramona Wheeler of Washington, DC; two brothers, Jones Broadway, Jr. of Lexington and James Broadway, of Winston-Salem; her daughters, Marilyn King and Cheryl Kinard (Anthony) both of Winston-Salem, and Carole Rice (Rodney) of Fairfax, VA; sons, Marion Travis Ragins, of Greensboro and Ronald Ragins (Janice) of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Candace Spaulding Ragins Beamon (Chester) of Clemmons, Samantha Rice of Fairfax, VA, Rahni Nicole Ragins of Santa Barbara, CA, and Jarrett Ragins, of Winston-Salem; one great-grandchild, Camron Smith of Clemmons; and a host of other relatives and friends.
