Obituary

June Elizabeth Poindexter Anthony was born on January 21, 1950 in Roanoke, Virginia to Alphonso and Katherine Poindexter.  On Tuesday, August 20, 2019, with her daughters by her side, she was called home to be with our Lord.  June was raised by her Aunt Wilhelmina Beck and Grandmother, Saludia Mitchell in a loving family setting with her sister, Beverly Ann Warren; cousins/siblings, Douglas Mitchell and Patricia Shouse; while her parents worked in Salisbury, North Carolina.

June was an active and very involved community supporter of the National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF), where she was the Box Office Manager and Festival Volunteer for over 30 years.  In addition, June was a supporter of Cancer Services of Winston-Salem; United Way for over forty years and volunteer for many other causes in the community.

June has two loving daughters whom she adored—they are known by all as the TRIO (June, Renee' and Rachelle).  She devoted her life to meeting All of her children's/grandchildren's needs, supporting their goals, being at every event, game, function and activity you could imagine even if it meant traveling to Charlotte and back in the same day for her next play, function or event!

June's love of Jesus Christ began at Saint James United Methodist Church, Rural Hall.  This love continued with her being a faithful servant in the community at Macedonia, Union Baptist Church, and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Charlotte, NC.  June loved her inspirational messages, the melodious voices of the choirs and the love she has always received in the faith community.

June graduated from Reynolds High School in 1968 and received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education in 1973 from Winston Salem State University.  She has been an active alumnae and supporter of the University ever since.  Her Ram Pride was evident annually with her Class Reunions, Homecoming, and many special choral and arts events---none of which she missed.

June has worked her entire life supporting her family and advancing her Professional career in Business while with the Travel Department at R.J. Reynolds, where she retired.  Afterwards, she continued her career at Winston-Salem State University in several Administrative supportive positions.  June has always continued volunteering in the community and most recently was the Co-Chair of Forsyth County Democratic Women.

June's memory will be cherished by her daughters, Dawn Renee' Anthony Leak (Jeffrey) of Huntersville, North Carolina and Devonne Rachelle Anthony of Concord, North Carolina; two grandchildren, Jaelyn Mikayla Leak and Rylan Jeffrey Leak; several sisters-in-law; brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, special cousins, and forever friends.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm Saturday, August 24, 2019 at Union Baptist Church with Bishop Sir Walter Mack, Jr. officiating.  Interment will follow in the St. James United Methodist Church Cemetery, Rural Hall, NC.  The family visitation will be held from 2:00pm until 3:00pm on Saturday at the Church.
