On January 23, 2016 we lost our loving father, brother, and friend. Mr. Julius W. Cornell, Jr., 71, affectionately known to many as "Coon", "Big Dude", "Pops", and "Taxman" just to name a few was born June 12, 1944 to Sarah Sherrill and Julius W. Cornell, Sr.
He graduated from Atkins High School in 1963 and attended NC A&T State University. He was a self-made man of many talents. He was the owner of House Doctor Home Repair Services and he also helped to prepare taxes and legal counsel. Julius was a Lieutenant of Defense in the Black Panther Party in the 1970's where he helped the community in many ways, especially with a free breakfast program and free ambulance service. He was an activist for the City of Winston-Salem and fought proudly for many changes to better the African-American Community.
He never turned his back on a friend! You may have fallen out, but he would always do his part to fix it. He loved being with his family and friends in which he shared many gatherings with them.
If he knew you needed him and he could help, he would be there.
He loved football as he was an avid Oakland Raiders Fan and playing bid whist.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ronnie Cornell; and his sister, Louise Cornell.
He leaves to cherish his memories his loving children, Julius Cornel, III, Myra Cornell, Jeffery Cornell, LaShonda Redd, LeMark Redd, and Johnthan Bishop; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Terry (Gracie) Smith and Lewis (Glenda) Cornell; four sisters, Joan Cornell, Rosalind Cornell, Yvonne Cornell, and Loretta Sherrill; a host of nieces and nephews, and many special dear friends.
Memorial services will be held at 6:00pm Friday, January 29, 2016 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Apostle Dr. Bradford Lilley officiating. The family visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 6:00pm on Friday at the Chapel.
