Obituary

Julia Mae Isom Johnson, 98, was born December 27, 1921 in Winston-Salem, NC to Joseph and Mary Isom. She passed away on November 22, 2020 at Forest Heights Assisted Living after a brief period of illness.

Julia enjoyed a long life of teaching and travelling the world. Julia was an educator by profession having graduated from Winston-Salem teachers College, Class of 1943 and NC A&T State University's Graduate School. She was a retired employee of the Goldsboro City School System. After returning to Winston-Salem upon retirement, Julia taught 4 th grade at Mineral Springs Elementary School. She was a faithful member of St. John CME Church where she sang in the choir for many years. Julia was a faithful member of the Winston-Salem Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority where she enjoyed interacting with the younger sorority sisters.

In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death by her brothers, Henry Isom and Odell Isom.

Julia Mae is survived by two nieces, her caregiver and guardian, Shirley Payne Carter (Thurmond) of Pfafftown, NC and Viola Anderson McKinney of Charlotte, NC; nephews, Joseph Payne (Glendora) and Owen Douthit (Sharon); her CNA caregiver, Sharon Clark, who assisted her at her home and at the Assisted Living facility; a devoted grandniece who assisted with her care, Shantha Hyman Caldwell, of Clemmons, NC; a devoted soror, Deidra Howie; and several grand nieces and nephews, cousins, her church family, and friends.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Monday, November 30, 2020 at Russell Funeral Home.

Private funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 1, 2020. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
