Mr. Juan Nelson Johnson, affectionately called "Spooky," departed this life Thursday, May 21, 2015 at the KB Reynolds Hospice Home following an extended period of illness. He was born to the late Ms. Azariah H. Johnson in Washington, DC on July 14, 1946.
Juan attended the public schools of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and was a 1965 graduate of Atkins High School. He was awarded a BS degree in Education at Winston-Salem State University in 1973.
Mr. Johnson was a faithful member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. And he regularly worshiped during the No Frills Sabbath Service at the church until declining health limited his attendance. Juan worked in retail at K Mart for 23 years and he was employed at Lowe's Home Center for nine years. He loved music, watching sports, walking and cooking. He was especially fond of the Chicago Cubs and the Washington Red Skins.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his brother, George L. Johnson.
Those family members who survive and who will forever cherish loving memories include his devoted wife of 33 years, Karen J. Johnson; his daughter, Tumeka Johnson and his son, DeCarlo R. Johnson both of the city; mother-in-law, Elizabeth P. Jones; four brothers-in-law, Clifton E. Jones, Jr. of Walnut Cove, NC, Everette A. (Lisa) Jones of St. Petersburg, FL, Kenneth R. (Sherri) Jones of Fort Washington, MD and Roland L. (Andre') Jones of Lanham, MD; a host of nieces, nephews and friends; his supportive part-time caregivers, Danny Imes, George Johnson, Gertrude Brunson and Jackie and Vincent Parker.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Mount Zion Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will greet friends thirty minutes prior to the services from 11:30am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
