Obituary

Dr. Joyce Faye Williams-Green was born to Mrs. Bessie Virginia McDonald Williams and Mr. Joseph Arnold "JA" Williams on September 6, 1948 in Sanford, NC.  She attended and graduated from W. B. Wicker High School.  She was a member of the high school band, honor society, cheerleading squad, and majorettes.  Joyce attended North Carolina Central University (1966-70) and earned a BS degree in Home Economic Education; Lehman College in New York, NY (1974-76) and earned a MS in Intermedia Education; and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA (1980-83) and earned a Doctor of Education in Curriculum & Instruction/Instructional Technology.  Joyce was raised as a Baptist in the Mt. Pisgah Lee Free Will Baptist Church in Sanford, NC.  She attended many different churches until she joined St. Paul AME Church in 1982.  Joyce was active in St. Paul as a member of the choir and Stewardess.  Upon her move to North Carolina, Joyce joined St. James AME Church and became an active member and officer of the choir and as Chair of Christian Education.  Joyce established and funded the computer lab at St. James.  Joyce loved St. James and her work with the church.

Dr. Joyce Williams-Green worked as a public-school teacher in the Bronx, NY (1971-77); Director of Media Center at Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC (1977-80); Assistant to the Provost and was promoted to Assistant Provost in 1985.  Joyce decided that she wanted a fulltime teaching and an appointment as Director of Black Studies at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA (1989-98). After accepting the position, Dr. Williams-Green stabilized and enhanced the Black Studies program.  Student enrollment and faculty numbers increased significantly.  Joyce was invited to apply for the position of Associate Provost and Chief Information Officer at Winston-Salem State University (1998-2004).  She was selected for this position.

Dr. Joyce Williams-Green professional accomplishments include: an award for first animated film (Food is More than Just Something to Eat) in the New York Public School System; establishment of first Media and Learning Center at Livingstone College; Virginia Tech establishment of first student Retention Program (V-TASP), Black History Month Program, first online graduate course at Virginia Tech; Winston-Salem State University establishment of Faculty Development Center (CITTLE), enhanced the Information Technology Systems (Information Resources), established Access Grid and Supercomputing initiatives with faculty at Winston-Salem State University in Winston-Salem, NC.  She was also very active at state and national levels of information technology.  Joyce loved her family, friends, and her dog, Akemi. Her faith was strong, and she felt the love of her family, friends, and her work were the greatest of blessings from God.

Dr. Joyce Williams-Green was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated.

Dr. Joyce Williams-Green was preceded in death by her mother, Bessie Virginia McDonald Williams and her father, Joseph Arnold "JA" Williams.

Survivors include her husband, Edward William Green; three daughters, Joyce Ann (Richard Grow) Wood of Cincinnati, OH, Connie (Keith) Blair of Atlanta, GA, and Denise (Keith) Houston of Blacksburg, VA; son, Michael Green of Blacksburg, VA; three grandsons, Don Moody (Stacey) Pasco of Washington, Adam Blair of Atlanta, GA, and Darrion Houston of Blacksburg, VA; granddaughter, Karla Moody-Woodruff (Drew) of West Richland, Washington; five great-grandchildren of Washington; brother, Charles Arnold (Rhonda) Williams of Sanford, NC; aunt, Esther Simms of Yuba City, CA;  special nephews, Charles Williams, Jr. and Ashley Williams of Sanford, NC; special great-nieces, Talia Williams and Skylar Claybrook of Sanford, NC; great-nephew, Malik Williams of Fayetteville, NC; a host of special cousins too numerous to name; Godchildren, Ian and Simone and their mother, Natalie Shelton; Godson, Trey Mitchell; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins too numerous to name all of them.

Special thanks to her closest friends, Elsie Huff, Carolyn Fox, Barbara Richmond, Gladys Shelton, Evelyn Cox, Larry Cox, and Rita Cotton. Special thanks to her caretaker, Jeanette Jones.  Special thanks to the Angus Ridge Community and St. James AME Church Family.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm-5:00pm Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Russell Funeral Home.
