Joseph Smith was born on February 23, 1918. He had eight brothers and four sisters. He was the son of Cora and William Smith who were originally from Richmond, VA. Joseph's mother was a Godly woman who taught her children to treat everyone right and "Trust in God"
In order to build a better life the family moved to New York where Joseph was born. He attended the Public School System in New York.
Joseph accepted Christ at an early age. Under the guidance of his mother he joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. They were both there to see the church grow from a subway church to a large church that the members were proud of.
The family decided under the spiritual leadership of his mother, "to Plant Our Feet On Higher Ground," and moved to St. Albans, Queens. There the family joined Bethany Baptist Church and Joseph who loved singing joined the Gospel Chorus.
Mr. Smith was joined in holy matrimony to Ester M. Little in 1998 and joined the South Hempstead Baptist Church in Hempstead, NY. Joseph served on the Senior Choir and Male Chorus. In 2002 they relocated to Winston-Salem, NC.
Mr. Smith united in Christian Fellowship with Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. He was as member of the Mass Choir, Male Chorus, and a member of the Senior Men Sunday school class.
Throughout Joseph's life he was a harder worker. He loved his family and acquired many friends. He lived his life to the fullest.
"I was glad when they said unto me, let us go into the house of the Lord." In the night of our precious Lord, on Saturday, December 19, 2009 the trumpet sounded claiming victory of one of God's soldiers, Joseph Smith, summoned from labor to rest. Sleep on our dear loved one and take your rest, we loved you dearly but God loved you best.
He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted wife, Ester and her children; Harold (Tanya) Little of Williamstown, NJ, Lee (Daphne) Little of Raleigh, NC and Kirby Little of Dallas Fort Worth, TX; his daughter, Jolene Lynette Kanard of Bethpage, NY; one God-daughter, Patrice Edwards Randolph of Atlanta, GA; two brothers-in-law, John (Carlene) Timmons of Burlington, NC and Willie (Gloria) Timmons of Marlton, NJ; four sisters-in-law, Patricia Timmons of Winston-Salem, NC, Jean Simmons of Mechanicsville, VA, Martha (Stewart) Meyers of Camden, NJ; and Joyce Timmons of Camden, NJ; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, December 28, 2009 at Morning Star Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until 1 p.m. on Monday at the Church.
