At age 88, Joseph Alphonzo Matthews passed on Thursday, July 30, 2015 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in W-S, NC on December 7, 1926 to William and Alice Matthews.

Joe served in the US Army before working as a truck driver for over 30 years for two grocery products distributing companies. Joseph was married to Virginia J. Matthews.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his three brothers, William, Robert, and Nathaniel Matthews; and four sisters, Helen Carter, Hazel King, Mabel Moore, and Johnnie Mae Thomas.

As well as his wife Virginia, he leaves to cherish his memory a caring son, Curtis (Brenda) Jarrett; grandson, Cory (Kimberly) Jarrett; sisters, Hymeria Teet and Ivernia Olford; devoted niece, Sabrina Thomas; and a host of many family members who will cherish his memory.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Thursday, August 6, 2015 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Paul Thombs officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 2:00pm on Thursday at the Chapel.
