Obituary

Joseph Brannon, Jr. passed away peacefully on Friday, March 24, 2023, following complications related to cancer.

Born in Winston-Salem on November 21, 1968, Joseph, affectionately known as "JoJo", was the youngest of three and only son of the late Joseph Brannon, Sr. and Vonetta Wheeler Brannon. While JoJo relished in being the baby of the family, he loved and admired his two older sisters, the late Rhonda Brannon Scales and the late Anita Brannon Phillips. And when he wasn't chasing after his older sisters, you could catch him running with his crew of childhood friends, forging an inseparable bond that would persist for decades – Bro, Chimp, Frank, and Sam.

To know JoJo was to love him instantly – his infectious smile, adventurous energy, and fun-loving nature quickly transformed any stranger into a friend. He loved spending time outdoors – when he wasn't zipping down the highway on his motorcycle, you might find him swinging his golf club at the local driving range. Like his two older sisters, he was a natural creative, trying his hand at producing music, building something, or creating an art in countless mediums.

After graduating from North Forsyth High School, JoJo earned his associate degree from North Carolina A&T State University. From there, he spent most of his adult life as a beloved Retail Manager at Lowe's Hardware, where you might have seen him donning a Santa hat in a WXII12 commercial every Christmas, promoting the store's holiday drive.

JoJo was preceded in death by his grandmother, Estelle W. Wheeler; his uncle, Robert E. Wheeler "Sonny"; his father, Joseph Brannon, Sr.; his sisters, Rhonda Brannon Scales and Anita Brannon Phillips; and his first and only son, Joseph Brannon, III.

His legacy endures through his mother, Vonetta W. Brannon; his daughters, Asia Bradley and DaTaja Brannon; his granddaughters, Aiko and Namiko Stovall; his nieces, Jade Phillips Joyner (Daniel) and Shelby M. Phillips; his nephew, Cory Scales; his great-nieces, Ellis and Loren Joyner; his devoted brother-in-law, Percy Phillips; the mothers of his children, Watasha Conrad, Missie Bradley-Jones, and Andrea Bills; and a host of extended family and friends.

A sincere, heartfelt thank you to all of JoJo's wonderful friends and family for your prayers, support, respect for privacy, and acts of kindness. The family also extends a special note of gratitude to his beloved partner, Dorothy, who never left his side in his final years and cared for him to the very end. The family also extends their gratitude to the medical practitioners at Novant Health, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, and Trellis Supportive Care.

A family visitation, open to the public, will be held from 1:00pm until 2:00pm Friday, March 31, 2023 at Russell Funeral Home. A graveside service will immediately follow at 2:30pm in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.

The family requests privacy and advises against home visits during this difficult time.
