Obituary

Joseph E. Johnson, born April 8, 1951 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, passed away on January 14, 2026.

Joseph, better known as “Joe”, will be remembered as a man of class, a proud United States Marine, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man whose intelligence, humor, and fierce love for his family shaped the lives of all who knew him.

Joe honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps as a Military Policeman, carrying out his duties with discipline, courage, and integrity. The values he lived by as a Marine, loyalty, honor, and commitment, remained guiding principles throughout his life.

After completing his military service, Joe built a long and respected career with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, where he worked with dedication and pride until his retirement. Throughout his career he was known as an exemplary employee whose professionalism, reliability, and strong work ethic earned him recognition and honors.

Joe was a man of remarkable intellect with knowledge both broad and deep. He had a lifelong love of studying history and enjoyed classic films, gangster movies, and westerns. He stayed engaged with the world by following current political affairs and found great enjoyment watching animal and nature programs.

Those closest to him knew him as a man who was brilliant, witty, and wonderfully funny, with a sharp sense of humor that brought laughter to those around him. Above all else, Joe loved his family fiercely and took great pride in their lives and accomplishments.

One of the greatest lights in Joe’s life was his son, Shawn Johnson, who followed in his father’s footsteps by also serving in the United States Marine Corps. Shawn passed away in 2015 after a brief battle with cancer. Joe carried the love and memory of his son in his heart always.

Joe leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of over 55 years, Linda K. Johnson; his cherished mother, Mary L. Johnson (age 94); his loving daughter, Sonya Robinson, and her husband, Darick Robinson, whom he regarded as a son; his devoted sister, Mary L. Fergusson (David Fergusson); his adored grandchildren, Soniyah Robinson and Elijah Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and in-laws who loved him dearly.

Graveside services and inurnment will be held at 2:30pm Friday, April 17, 2026 in Salisbury National Cemetery.
