Mr. Johnny Benjamin Evans, 94, departed this life on February 7, 2018 at his residence. He was born on February 23, 1923 in Greenville, SC. He was the youngest of 12 children born to the late Robert and Hattie Evans. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Earlie, Eugene, Daniel, Rayfield, Willie, James, Alice Moses, Dime, Rosie Benson, Gladys and Genevive. Mr. Evans was educated in the Greenville, SC school system. When leaving there, he joined the United States Army. After his term in the Army, he joined the United States Air Force and served his term there.
He started a trucking business and traveled the USA. He met and married the love of his life, Lorraine Jackson who was lost in the Katrina Hurricane.
He retired from the Florida Transportation Services in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He loved driving, fishing, and spending time with family.
Later in life he moved to Winston-Salem to be closer to his only sister, Rosie Benson and niece, Myrene Staplefoote. He was retired but never unemployed. He volunteered taking people back and forth to work and to stores. He never met a stranger. His famous words were "slow down and take it easy, that way you'll live a long time."
At a late age he had an opportunity to rededicate his life to Christ and even was able to take his last Communion on January 14, 2018.
He leaves to cherish his memories four generations of nieces and nephews from the East Coast to the West Coast and many friends.
The family would like to thank KBR Hospice, Eva Cherry Staplefoote, and Lois Harden for their dedicated services.
