Ms. Johnnie Mae Armstrong, 74, departed this life on Friday, August 26, 2022 alongside family at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home located in Winston-Salem, NC. As a believer of her faith, she reunites with her late parents, John Thomas and Dorothy Lucille Armstrong; sister, Bennie Kay Armstrong; and brother, Bernard Armstrong.
She was born on August 8, 1948, the eldest of six siblings and an early adopter to being a nurturer, as shown by her caring and loving nature. In 1967 she graduated from Paisley High School and continued her education at Winston-Salem State College where she earned her Associates Degree in Administration. Johnnie Mae went on to utilize those skills as an employee in the administrative offices at the college.
Ms. Armstrong desired to enlist in the United States Army and did so during the years of 1980 to 1984 where she was a chef serving in Stuttgart, Germany and Fort Hood, Texas. Upon her return to the United States, she continued to use her culinary expertise by becoming a Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System staff member until 2001. Johnnie Mae continued to serve as a food service employee until her retirement with Family Services Head Start in 2014.
Ms. Johnnie Mae Armstrong is survived by her only son, Shawn Bernard Armstrong and spouse, Elaine; sister, Sherri Armstrong of Delran, NJ; two brothers, Ronnie Armstrong and Charlie Armstrong both of Winston-Salem, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, many cousins, a multitude of friends who are family also.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
