Mr. John Henry Powell, age 82, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, December 11, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital. John was born on December 10, 1937 to the late Flossie and George Powell Sr. in Commerce, GA. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 brothers, George Jr and Lonnie; 3 sisters, Maggie, Mattie and Mary Paul; and his daughter, Vernice Hardy Westmoreland.

John was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. He retired from Hanes Brands after 28 years of service and from Lankford Security after 14 years of service.

John was an evangelist who enjoyed talking with everyone he met about the goodness of God. In his youth he was an amateur boxer and played football for Carver High School. John was a diehard Atlanta Falcons fan and an avid Lebron James fan.

John leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 44 years, Deborah Powell; grandchildren, Shamika Hardy, Stephon Hardy, and Spring Powell; fifteen great-grandchildren; sister, Ida (Ramsey) Cathey; brother-in-law, Paul (Dee) Feggins, sisters-in-law, Paulette (Bud) Frazier and Kay Boston; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Monday, December 16, 2019 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:00pm on Monday at the Chapel
