John J. Clyburn Jr. after having an extended period of illness peacefully made his transition from Earth to Glory on April 9, 2016. Throughout his life he was affectionately known as "Butch." He was the eldest child of the late Rev. and Mrs. John J. Clyburn Sr.
Butch was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools and was a 1965 graduate of Atkins Sr. High School. He was a veteran, having served in the Viet Nam Era. Butch worked 28 years for RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company as a Lab Technician and Machine Operator. He relocated to Hampton, VA in 1995 and worked for the Veterans Administration. After the passing of his wife Aliza Clyburn in 2008, he moved back to Winston-Salem where he lived with his brother, Rev. James R. Clyburn, Sr. Butch was a very friendly and affectionate person with a wonderful charismatic personality that could light up any room. After returning to Winston-Salem, he reunited with the Red Bank Baptist Church and was in regular attendance until his health began to decline.
He leaves to cherish his memories one son, Deddrick (Pam) Hatchett of Winston-Salem, NC; one daughter, Karen Clyburn of Winston-Salem; two brothers, LTC (Retired) William (Linda) Clyburn of Bowie MD and Rev. James R. (Bernadette) Clyburn, Sr. of Kernersville, NC; four grandchildren, Shekinah Green of Charlotte, NC, Brittany Hatchett, Brianna Hatchett, and Bryce Hatchett all of Winston-Salem, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
