Obituary

Mr. Joe Gatewood, 74 of 100 West 25th Street passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2007. He was born in Wadesboro, NC on August 22, 1933 to Charles and Rosa Gatewood.

He attended Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He was also a member of the Piedmont Checker Club.

Mr. Gatewood was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wade Gatewood.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Ruby Gatewood-Revell; three sons, Joe (Olympia) Gatewood, Stephon (Cheryl) Gatewood, and Ernest "Butch" Smith; seven grandchildren, Anton Brown, Goshen Townsend, Ernest Long, LaNita and ShaQuita Wilkes, Denard and Chasmon Gatewood; two great-grandchildren, Ja'Mise Brown and JayShawn Singleton; one brother, Charles (Maggie) Gatewood; three sisters, Sarah G. Williams, Aggie G McLendon, and Lucy G. Lupper; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A celebration of Joe's Life will be held at 1pm Saturday, December 1, 2007 from the Calvary Hill Church of Greater Deliverance, 4951 Manning Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105 with Bishop Claude C. Turner officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12 Noon until 12:30 and "Reflections of Joe" will be held from 12:30pm until 1pm on Saturday at the Church.

Correspondence may be sent to and the family may be contacted at the home of his daughter, Ruby Gatewood-Revell at 2350 Leight Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

The family will assemble and leave from the same address.

The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Mr. Thomas Randall and the staff of Winston-Salem Rehabilitation and Health Care center for being a very present help in our time of need.
