Joanna Ferguson Lipscomb was born in Kentuck, VA on April 8, 1932 to Reverend Harvey and Edith Ferguson.
She attended the public school system in Pittsylvania County, VA. After graduation from Southside High, she entered Virginia State College. During her attendance at Virginia State, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Upon graduation, Joanna began teaching in the county school system. She married Lt. Lawrence Lipscomb on November 8, 1954 and began her life as an army wife. She lived in several states and had two tours in Europe. She visited Paris, Rome, Copenhagen and Brussels during her European Tours.
In the mid 1970's, Joanna began a new career. She discovered that she had what it took to be successful in real estate. So, for the next 15 years she was an award winning realtor.
Joanna loved working in the church. She was active in Sunday School and sang in choirs wherever she worshiped. She loved her family and cherished the opportunity to prepare family meals on holidays and special occasions. She was truly the matriarch of her family.
Joanna passed away in the presence of her husband of sixty-four years, on October 25, 2018.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Cora.
She leaves to grieve her husband of sixty-four years, Lt. Colonel Lawrence Lipscomb, Sr., US Army (retired); children, Lawrence Lipscomb, Jr. (Lailah), Stephen (Griselda) Lipscomb, and Lori (Russell) Toney; sister, Ella Saunders; brother, Bernard (Malissa) Ferguson; twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild; and a host of family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:00pm on Wednesday at the Church. Interment will be held at 12noon Thursday, November 1, 2018 in Virginia Veterans Cemetery @ Amelia, 10300 Pridesville Road, Amelia, VA 23002.
