Jo Yvette Ledbetter Hatcher was born in Winston-Salem, NC on January 23, 1948 to Ruth Ballentine Ledbetter and the late James Ledbetter. She departed this life on Sunday, December 16, 2007.
She grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and was educated in the Winston-Salem public school system graduating in 1966 from Atkins High School. She earned a Bachelor's Degree from Winston-Salem Teacher's College in 1970 and received her Masters of Education Degree from North Carolina A & T State University.
Yvette was a devoted educator who taught for many years in Mecklenburg County, Virginia; Saginaw, Michigan; and Thomasville, North Carolina. She retired from the Winston-Salem/ Forsyth County School system in 2006 from Hill Middle School.
She was a member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church where she served as the Vacation Bible School Director for many years. She sang in the Gospel Choir, Christian Fellowship Choir, and was a member of the One Voice Ensemble. She served on the morning praise team, often worked in the church nursery, and was a member of the Active Adult and Hospitality/Ambassadress Ministries. She most recently served as co-chair of the Women's Week Committee.
Yvette was involved in many community activities. She was a member of the Winston-Salem Alumnae Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated. She was very active in the Winston-Salem State University National Alumni Association and the Kimberly Park Alumni Chapter. She served as special events chair for the National Alumni Association for over 17 years planning homecoming and alumni events. For many years she was a coordinator with the National Black Theater Festival. Yvette had been involved with the Girl Scout program at her church since 1975 and will be remembered as the leader of Brownie Troup 336 and for the many service team positions she held with Service Unit 43 of the Tarheel Triad Girl Scouts.
She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Fredrick Hatcher; her mother, Ruth B. Ledbetter; a sister, Sandra P. Ledbetter of Richmond, VA; a brother, A. Wayne (Melissa) Ledbetter; brothers-in-law, Robert Lee Hatcher of Durham, NC, Phillip Q. (Carolyn) Hater of Cleveland, OH, Mark Hatcher of Charlotte, NC, Timothy L. (Gail) Hatcher of Greensboro, NC, and Oliver J. (Zephra) Hatcher of Fredrick, MD; a sister-in-law, Kathy S. Hatcher of Washington, DC; aunts, Yvonne B. (Otis) Fluker of Lexington, KY, Bernice Ledwell of Greensboro, NC, Alma R. Lewis of Phoenix, AZ, and Vivian L. Cox of Tucson, AZ; uncles, Brian (Phyllis) Ballentine, Bruce (Sandra) Ballentine, and Samuel Lewis of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; a niece, Jaime Ledbetter Belton; a great-nephew, Anthony Belton; a devoted friend, Vanessa Gist; and a number of other relatives and friends.
In celebration of her life funeral services will be held at Noon Friday, December 21, 2007 from the Untied Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Prince Raney Rivers officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11am until Noon on Friday at the Church.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's Omega Omega services will begin at 10:30am Friday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Endowment Fund of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, the Winston-Salem State University Foundation, Inc., or the Tarheel Triad Girl Scouts.
