With the dignity and grace that she exhibited in life, Mrs. Jerrilyn Jenkins Johnson Ingram passed away on July 14, 2017 at Trinity Glen Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Winston-Salem, NC. Jerrilyn was born on June 25, 1949 to Mrs. Thessalonia Jenkins and the late Frizell Jenkins.
Jerrilyn was a 1967 graduate of Atkins High School. She received her BS degree from Winston-Salem State University, her Master's degree from Wayne University in Detroit, MI, and in 1994 she received her EDS degree from NC A&T State University.
Her professional career included positions with WSFCS as a classroom teacher, school counselor, and as the first director of Project Hope, a program that is offered by the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School. This program is dedicated to ensuring that all children and youth experiencing homelessness have access to educated services. Project Hope inspired Jerrilyn to write a book, which has been published, entitled, "Mommy Are We Homeless."
Jerrilyn was a lifelong member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church. As the Chairman of the Black History Committee, she organized the first city-wide celebration of the Juneteenth Celebration. She served as program chairman and vice-president of the Amanda Galloway Aid Society, including ten years with "Girl Talk." During her tenure, she coordinated the Million Women's March in Philadelphia in 1997. Surviving are her loving devoted mother, Thessalonia Jenkins; brother, Norman R. Jenkins; daughter, Tessa Johnson; granddaughter, Avanna Johnson; a very special friend, Linda Cloud; two special aunts, Mary Ford and Irene Smith; along with a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, July 21, 2017 at Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Sherwood T. Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1:00pm on Friday at the Church.
