Mr. Jefferson Rollins, 77 departed this life on March 15, 2009 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 23, 1931 in Boykins, VA to David J. and Pearl Deloatch Rollins. He was educated in the Southampton County School System and also studied machinery and industrial technology at Pratt University in New York. A veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Rollins received an honorable Discharge from the U.S. Army in May 1954. He retired from the New York City Transit Authority where he was a Collection Agent. Mr. Rollins was a devoted member of St. James AME Church where he served on the Steward Board and sang in the Men's Chorus and Combined Choir for a number of years. He was an active member of the Carver Senior Citizens Club. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Christine Rollins and Lizzie Pearl Blow; and three brothers, John David Rollins, Joe Lewis Rollins, and Clarence Lee Rollins.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of over 50 years, Vivian Barnes Rollins; three children, Steven Kwesi Rollins of Washington, DC, Reverend Timothy Rollins (Victoria) of Atlanta, GA, and Patricia Vivian Rollins of Charlotte, NC; one grandchild, Torria Jamari Rollins; nine brothers and sisters, Bessie Bell Parker, Thomas Ell Rollins, Ovella Mae Joyner (Henry), William Henry Rollins (Vivian Nannie), Mary Stephens, James Herbert Rollins, Jeremiah Rollins (Marion), Roosevelt Rollins (Elizabeth "Liz"), and Ruby Rollins Harney (Robert "Bob"); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. We are especially grateful to a close and dear friend, Brenda Teal. He was a blessing to all who survive him.
Funeral services will be held at 12Noon Thursday, March 19, 2009 from the St. James AME Church with Reverend Benjamin F. Humphrey, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12Noon on Thursday at the Church.
The family wishes to express their special thanks to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice home, the staff of Forsyth Medical Center, the Regional Cancer Center, and to all others for their many prayers and other acts of kindness.
