Obituary

Jeanette Marie McCaskill was born April 13, 1948, in Hamlet, NC. Early in her childhood the family moved to Winston Salem, NC.

Jeanette was raised in the Happy Hill Gardens community of Winston Salem. She graduated from Atkins High School and later obtained an associate's degree in Business. She relocated to the Maryland and New York area for a while and then decided to move back to NC to raise her family.

She worked in the X-Ray Department at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital for over 30 years and retired in 2008.  She was a member of Spencer Memorial Christian Church for most of her life.  She loved music, collecting angel figurines, and most of all she loved her family.  She was the oldest of three daughters and always had a tight bond with her sisters Angelon (Angela) and Margaretta (Denise).  She also had a special bond with her cousin, Brenda Teal Simon, who was like a sister to her.  She and her sisters loved to laugh and tease each other and share stories from their past, and they would always tease Jeanette about being able to make every man turn their heads when she walked in the room.  Jeanette was also an excellent cook.

She was very dedicated to raising her family and was considered "the guardian" of the family.  You may have often heard her speak about her oldest son, Ricky who was instrumental in providing care as she aged and her daughter Dakeeta who she often called her "baby." She had a close bond with her grandchildren, Chaverria, China, Kelvin and Melvin, and later adopted them and raised them as if they were her own children and was fiercely protective of them.  She was instrumental in raising several children throughout her lifetime including her stepchildren Terrie, Angie, and Tony Ross and Weymouth Jones (Rose).  She was an influence on several of her neighbors and coworkers and everyone knew "Ms. Jeanette."  She had a special relationship with her nieces, Tameka Bernard (Chris) and Kendra Windham (Alex); and nephew, Chad Waiters and created a competition with her sisters to see who could spoil them the most.  She adored her maternal aunts and uncles and always talked about their impact on her upbringing.

Jeanette peacefully transitioned in her sleep on September 11, 2021.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Dinah Mae McCaskill McNeill (Diane).

She is survived by her father, Herbert McCummings; her stepfather, Charles McNeill; her sisters, Angelon McCaskill Watson (Olin) and Margaretta (Denise) McCaskill; her children, Ricky McCaskill Sr., Dakeeta McCaskill Hunter (Marvin), Chaverria Wilson, China King-McCaskill, Kelvin McCaskill, Melvin McCaskill (Shaunasia), Ricky McCaskill, Jr., Marvaughn Hunter Perez (Martin), and Maija Ross-Hall; 14 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, cousins and dear friends.

Jeanette will always be remembered as the guardian of the family and will be greatly missed.

Private memorial services will be held Saturday, September 25, 2021.
