Obituary

Jeanette Catherine Bowling Maharajh, a source of love and inspiration while on earth, is now a beautiful angel in heaven. Jeanette was born in Lewistown, PA on August 13, 1927, and left this earthly life, with her family surrounding her, on July 31, 2014, three weeks before her 87th birthday.

She graduated from Bucknell University, and was attending Columbia University when she met the love of her life, Andrew Daudharry Maharajh, a prince of Trinidad, West Indies, who was at the time working on his MS at Bucknell University. They were married for 63 years, raised five children together in Trinidad, and returned to the United States in 1986, after retiring, to be with their children and grandchildren.

Jeanette was an educator for more than thirty years. She was a teacher and vice-principal of St. Stephen's College in Trinidad, and she never lost her love of teaching. In retirement, she became a substitute teacher for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System and also taught at Forsyth Technical Community College. Upon moving to North Carolina, her strong beliefs in equality and fairness for all people, led to her participation in Beyond War, the Equity Committee for the W-S/Forsyth County school system. She also was a founding member of Crossing 52. She was very active in all aspects of St. Anne's Episcopal Church as a Sunday School teacher and lay minister/reader. She established Wednesday night Evensong services. Jeanette's true loves were her faith, her family, and her poetry. She has recently re-published her book of poems, From a Simple Heart.

Jeanette was the eldest sister of her siblings and was preceded in death by her brother, Charles Bowling; and her sister, Louella Barnett.

She leaves to miss her, her darling husband, Andrew; her children, Pateah Maharajh East, Jeanette Maharajh Balwah, Dr. Garnet D. Maharajh, Dr. Roberta G. Maharajh, and Shakuntala A. Maharajh; her sons-in-law, Teddy L. East and Wallace J. Balwah; her "adopted" children, Cynthia Ramkalawan (niece of Trinidad W.I), Geeta Maharaj, Dr. Kamal Dyal, and Santee Sitalal Banwarie; her grandchildren, Andrew, Andrea, Alicia, Garnet, Elizabeth, Arthur, Patterson, Reynolds, Connelly, Sarah, and Julian; her guidance and wisdom will leave a huge void in the lives of her great-grandchildren, Jaidyn, Justyce, Jaymison, and baby Julian who smiles with his Nanny every day; her siblings, Andrew Bowling, Richard Bowling, IV, Jane Bowling McLelland, and Thomas Barnett;
her brothers-in-law, Peter S. Maharajh and Randy McLelland; her sisters-in-law, Edith, Lily, Jean, Anna, Treana, and Pat; as well as her numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and other relatives, in the United States, Canada, England, Trinidad, and other parts of the world.

She was grateful to have such a diverse and wonderful family and would constantly speak about how truly blessed and thankful she was for her life and those whom she came to know and love. There will be a gaping hole in all our hearts without her presence. A hole that can only be filled with the beautiful memories we have of this magnificent lady and teacher.

Funeral services for Jeanette Catherine Bowling Maharajh will be held at 11am Saturday, August 23, 2014 at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, 2690 Fairlawn Dr. W-S, NC 27106.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to the Rector's Discretionary Fund.
