Janie Mae Crowder Murray was born on August 18, 1932 to James and Louise Crowder in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Janie was raised by her loving grandparents, Reverend John and Rosa Lee Crowder. Her foundation of Faith and Christianity was established with them at Mt. Calvary Holiness Church where she was a faithful member until her failing health caused her to move to Richmond, VA. It was then that she became Church Mother of Greater Harvest Fellowship ICM of which her daughter is the Pastor. Janie was known by MANY and never met a stranger.
Janie was educated in the Winston-Salem Public School System where she graduated from Atkins High School and went on to Cosmetology School and was Owner and Operator of her own Beauty Salon. She then became a School Crossing Guard and worked for the Local NAACP as well as the voting polls for many years. Janie was an Honorary Member of Order of Eastern Star and a Member of the Women's Auxiliary of The American Legion Post 220.
She departed this life December 9, 2020.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents; three sisters; three brothers; one grandchild; and lifelong friend and father of her children, Mr. Walter L. Murray Sr.
She leaves to cherish her memories four children, Seneca Brown (Albert), Walter L. Murray Jr. (Katresa), Darry S. Murray (Lou),and Tabitha Massey; thirteen grandchildren; twenty one great grandchildren; one sister, Louise Wright; a very special cousin, Mr. Roosevelt Bennett; a lifelong friend, Mother Dorothy Patterson; and a host of nieces, nephews, honorary Godchildren and friends
The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of The Laurels of Bon Air Assisted Living Facility for your sincere care and love.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Monday, December 14, 2020 at Russell Funeral Home.
Private funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
