Mr. James Edward Vinson, Sr. "BIG V", son of the late Lee Grant and Lelar Venson was born in Darlington County, South Carolina on May 28, 1936.
His pilgrimage of life came to an end on February 16, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.
James was a resident of Winston-Salem for over 70 years and was a current resident of the Easton Community. He attended 14 th Street School and Atkins High School. James was a veteran of the US Army, a member of American Legion Post 220, and a Mason with the Olympic Lodge 795. He retired from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company with 34 years of service. He also worked with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools in the Maintenance Department. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church for a number of years where he was a member of Sunday School Class No. 2, Men's Council, and a former member of the Senior and Spiritual Choirs. "Big V" as he was known by family and friends was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and great-great grandfather and was an uncle to a whole host of nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He had a great sense of humor and often shared funny jokes. His greatest passions were attending WSSU football and basketball games for over 20 years, having big cookouts, and spending quality time with his family. "Big V" was preceded in death by his son, Reginald Vinson; grandsons, Cedric, Jr. "CJ" and Kejuan Vinson; brother, Otis Venson; and sisters, Daisy Staten and Annie Hutson.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Azalee Roseboro Vinson; daughters, Vanessa Vinson Williams (Dennis), Tomeka Wardlow (Bobby) and Felicia Satchell; sons, Cedric Vinson (Rechella), Grant Vinson, Alton Vinson, Tyrone Davis, and James E. Vinson, Jr. who was his devoted caregiver; 31 loving grandchildren; 35 cherished great grandchildren; 3 sweet great- great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Robbie Allen; Dianne Roseboro, Bertha Parks, and Mildred Griffin; brothers-in-law, Gerald Hutson, Samuel Roseboro, Curtis Roseboro, Rev. Ardeal Roseboro, and Eugene Roseboro; his last first cousin, Anna Lee Frazier; best friends, Mrs. Lee Hilda Moore and the entire Moore family; and a great big host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Rest in Peace "Big V", We Love You.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12:00noon on Saturday at the Church. Interment will be held at 10:00am Monday, February 26, 2018 in Salisbury National Cemetery.
