James Willie Southerland, affectionately known as "Bud", was born on August 24, 1943 to the late Joe Willie and Lizzie Mae Gilchrist Southerland. He departed this life on February 10, 2015.

Bud graduated from Anderson High School of Winston Salem, NC. He was a Veteran of the United States Army and a retiree of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Johnny and Harold Southerland; and a daughter, Twana Southerland Gilliam.

He leaves to cherish his memories his daughter, Trevette Southerland Williams of Kernersville, NC; two sons, Monte Southerland (Kimberly) of Atikokan, Canada and Tim Edwards of Loris, SC; seven grandchildren; four sisters, Ida Mae Cunningham and Janifer Southerland of Winston-Salem, NC, Aletha Howell (Ken) and Doretha Hunter (Leroy) of Columbus, OH; one brother, Levernal Southerland of Winston-Salem, NC; aunt, Christine Mabry; uncle, Ervin Gilchrist; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1pm Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Dennis Leach officiating. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Thursday at the Church. Interment will be held at 11am Friday, February 20, 2015 in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.
