A life well lived, a love that lives forever
In Loving Memory of James Mitchell
February 19, 1937 – October 20, 2026
James Mitchell passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on October 20, 2026. James was thoughtful, humble, and generous. He reminds us that the most awesome heroes often work quietly, love faithfully, and leave the world better than they find it.
Born February 19, 1937, in Pine Hall, North Carolina, to the late George and Mildred Mitchell, James lived life with fierce strength and devotion as a loving husband, father, and provider.
A proud United States Navy veteran, James carried his commitment to service throughout his life. He was employed by R.J. Reynolds for 30+ years at Bailey Power Plant. He was dependable, honored his responsibilities, and offered support to those who needed him.
A lifelong member of Antioch Baptist Church, James expressed his faith through service on the Usher Board. His dedication to God and others reflected humility and grace.
A Love Story for the Ages
At the center of his life was his wife of 62 years, Dorothy Mitchell, his beloved “Dot”. Their marriage embodied enduring love, friendship, and devotion. Together, they traveled the world, embraced adventure, and built a home filled with laughter and treasured memories.
His Cherished Family
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy C. Mitchell; his children, Joseph (Bertha) Mitchell, Monticello (Dawn) Mitchell, LaCheryl (Rev. J. L.) Montgomery, LaRita (Rupert W. Jr.) Bell, Denita Mitchell, and Catanza (Robert Jr.) Moore. His cherished grandchildren are Vanika (DeMarcus) Garner, LaCherie (Bekah) Mitchell, DeJa Murray, Monticello Mitchell II, Carina Hairston, LaNita Bell, and Diana Chew. His beloved great-grandchildren are Amaria Garner, Ania Garner, Marley Mitchell, Caleigh Hairston, Bekham Mitchell, Winter White, and Quinn Murray.
He also leaves his sisters, Catherine (Bronson, deceased) King and Gloria (Andy, deceased) Barber; his brother, Alphonso Mitchell; his many nieces, nephews, relatives, fellow church members, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mildred Mitchell; and siblings, George (Pauline) Mitchell Jr., Hattie (Larence) Mack, Margaret Ann Searcy, and Sylvester Mitchell.
A Life Filled with Adventure and Joy
An avid golfer, James enjoyed the challenge and fellowship of the game. He loved hunting, fishing, spending time outdoors, and discovering places with Dorothy. His playful manner brought warmth and laughter to those around him. Affectionately called “Mitch” and “Bro,” he will be remembered for his joyful spirit.
A Legacy That Will Never Fade
His life testified to the power of faith, the beauty of lasting marriage, and the immeasurable value of a kind, generous heart.
Rest peacefully, James Mitchell. Your work here is done. May you find eternal rest in the loving arms of the God you served faithfully. The seeds of kindness you planted will continue to grow, the lives you changed will remember you, and your love for Dorothy will endure.
