Dr. James Marshall Jones, Jr. was born on June 4, 1924 to Meta and James Jones, Sr. Dr. Jones attended the local public schools graduating from Simon G. Atkins High School in 1941. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he attended and graduated from Talladega College in 1950. He furthered his education at Meharry Medical College earning a degree in medicine in 1954. His outstanding medical practice served the Winston-Salem community for 42 years.
He married Dorothy Butler in June 1954 and to this union 3 children were born: Cheryl, Rhonda, and Nancy.
Dr. Jones was a member of Goler Metropolitan AME Zion church where he served for many years as the Chairman of the Trustee Board. He was an active long standing member of various organizations including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the Social Promoters Club, Sigma Pi Phi Boule, Bachelor-Benedict Club, and the Old North State Medical Society.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by six sisters.
He leaves to mourn his daughters, Cheryl (Charles) Byrd, Rhonda Jones Scott, and Nancy Lynne Jones; grandchildren, Erin and Micah Byrd and Andrew Church; nephew, Marshall (Cynthia) Jeffries; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A celebration of his life will be held at 12:30pm Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church with Reverend Johnny Ruff officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:45am until 12:30pm on Thursday at the Church. The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Omega Services and the Gamma Kappa Chapter of the Sigma Pi Phi Boule' burial rites will begin at 11:00am Thursday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church.
