James Charles Greene, Sr. was born in Fairfield, South Carolina on June 2, 1920 to Johnnie C. Greene and Julia Belton Greene. He passed away after a brief illness on April 14, 2018 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ruth Greene; parents; and his son, James C. Greene, Jr.; he was also the last remaining child of six children five sisters, Mattie Pearson, Alice Williams, Grace Horne, Jessie Beal, and Matilda Wiseman; and one brother, George Greene. James moved to Richmond, Virginia, met and married Lillian E. Greene in 1940. From this union, three children, Laverne, James Jr. and Florence were born.
While in Richmond at a young age he worked at White's Pastry Shop, Williams Pharmacy and Harrington Pharmacy as a delivery man. He delivered pastries, prescriptions and medical supplies by bicycle. He loved to work. James was hired by the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Richmond for thirty five years. He relocated to Winston-Salem and later married Mary Ruth Miller. He worked for the Postal Service in Winston-Salem for thirteen years until retirement. He was considered "Jack of all trades." There were very few things he could not repair. He enjoyed being a welder for some of the Navy ships in the Tidewater area in Virginia. After retirement he did masonry work, installed hardwood flooring, wall papering, painting and loved interior decorating.
He leaves to rejoice in his memory two daughters, Laverne Freeman (James) and Florence Jackson (Eugene); a daughter-in-law, Alfreda Greene; seven grandchildren, Thomas Dawson, Jr. (Sara), Kevin Dawson (Toye), Everett Greene (Veronica), Eric Greene, Chanda Williams, Tamela Samuels, and Monica Greene; ten great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
