James Larry Cain, affectionately known as "Big Willie," was born on January 15, 1950, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to Annie Mae Davis Cain and Ervin Julius Cain. On Wednesday, October 15, 2025, he peacefully transitioned at Select Care in Greensboro, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, James Allen Cain and Ronnie (Adam) Cain.
Larry was raised attending Kimberly Park Holiness Church, where he was an active member of the Sunday School and deeply enjoyed learning about his Savior. He rarely missed a Sunday service.
Educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, Larry later moved to San Jose, California, where he joined the U.S. Army Reserves and proudly served for three years. He was employed with Global Trucking Company and made California his home for over 40 years. Upon returning to Winston-Salem, he worked with Flowers Bakery and Novant Health.
Larry was known for his warm spirit and his love for people — especially the ladies! He had a special bond with his nieces and nephews and cherished every moment spent with family. One of his greatest joys was attending the annual Cain/Chambers Family Reunion, where he could reconnect with those he loved most.
Larry leaves to cherish his memory his children: Shantea Gentry, James (Latavnia) Cain of Texas, Felicia Cain, Brandon (Desiree) Cain, and Antonio Darnell of California; his beloved grandchildren, Jamesha Cain, Deshaun Cain, Elijah Cain, Akilah Cain, Aiyana Cain, Khaliq Johnston, Khalis Cain, Brandon Cain Jr., King Cain, Faith Smith, and Mekhi Shanklin; he was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by his siblings, Franklin (Linda) Cain, Ervin Cain of California, Sheila Caldwell, Marilyn (Carl) Dunlap, Vickie (Andre') Newmones, Patricia (Cedric) Spann, and Gwendolyn Cain; he also shared a special bond with, Sharon (Mickey) Tharpe and Jarod Worthy; special cousins include, Willa Davis, Toney Fisher, and Renee Harrison; special friends, Patricia Hite, Janice Evans, and Barbara Bridges. He will also be remembered by a host of loving cousins, family members, and dear friends.
Larry's warmth, humor, and love for family will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
