Mr. James Othello Harper Brown, 79, affectionately known as "Chili Mack" was born on October 17, 1931 in Bastrop, LA and departed this life on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness.
While a student at Winston-Salem Teachers College (WSSU) he joined Grace Presbyterian Church where he was a faithful member for the remainder of his life and also a Deacon.
Mr. Brown was a 1953 graduate of Winston-Salem Teachers College and did post graduate work at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG).
While a student at Winston-Salem Teachers College he joined the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and was an active member for many years.
Mr. Brown taught school in Boone, NC for two years prior to his employment with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System. He taught at Diggs Elementary School for several years and served as a school social worker at the WSFC Administrative Office until his retirement. His work as a social worker often involved interaction with other social agencies, churches, and community resources.
Mr. Brown is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Doris Black Brown of the home; his daughter, LeVerne Rose Brown of Columbia, MD; two brothers, Donald and Jerry Davison of Paramount, CA; one brother-in-law, Walter Black, Jr. of Kernersville, NC; several devoted nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends.
