Mrs. Jacquelyn Raye Jenkins, affectionately called "Jacki," was born to the late Louise H. Davis and the late Robert Cowan in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on June 7, 1929.
The family relocated to White Plains, New York when Jacki was a young girl, and she was educated in the White Plains Westchester County School System. She attended the Orchid School of Cosmetology and became a licensed beautician and was self-employed for over twenty-five years.
After living in New York for more than forty years, Mrs. Jenkins returned to Winston-Salem and continued to operate a beauty shop in her home. She subsequently became a teacher's assistant with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System where she remained until retirement.
Mrs. Jenkins was a member of the Democratic Party. She was a strong community advocate, and to that end she worked with voter registration and was a leader for the Neighborhood Watch/National Night Out Campaign which promotes police/community partnerships. She was an active member of Black Leadership Winston-Salem and Snappy Tappers.
Sister Jenkins was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church where she exercised the tenets of her faith as a member of the Martha Missionary Group, served as a chaperon for the church's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Lock-In and she was in regular attendance at the Saturday No Frills Worship Service.
Mrs. Jacquelyn Raye Jenkins responded to the Lord's call to come home at Silas Creek Rehabilitation Center in Winston-Salem on Monday, September 26, 2022, following a period of illness.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Robert "Bobby" Raye; and her husband, Carl Jenkins.
Those family members who survive and who will forever cherish loving memories of her vibrant, joyful, comedic and beautiful spirit include her daughter, Michele R. (James) Grace; two granddaughters, Nichele (Ramsease) Potillo and Monica McCain (Peter Penn, Jr.); a grandson, Marc (Jessica) Raye; six great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; a devoted cousin, Talma Jean Rolison of Mount Vernon, NY; Godsister, Ernestine Nichols of Atlanta, GA; The Grace Family; and a host of faithful nieces and nephews from Seattle, WA, Florida, Delaware and New York.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Russell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Thursday, October 6, 2022 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Thursday at the Church.
