Deaconess Jacqueline Smith Sullivan departed this life Thursday, January 23, 2014 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center following an extended period of illness.
Deaconess Jackie Sullivan was born October 23, 1952 in Raleigh, North Carolina to the late Helen Smith and James Sanders. After the death of her mother, she moved to Winston-Salem in 1966 to live with her uncle and aunt, Forrest and Francina Smith, who adopted and raised her as their own daughter.
Deaconess Jackie Sullivan was a 1971 graduate of Atkins Senior High School and a 2001 graduate of Winston-Salem State University. She was a retired employee of AT&T with 30 years of service. She also participated in the community as a YEEP (Youth Enhancement Education Program) tutor at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and did her college internship as a Social Worker at Sunrise Towers. She had also served as a volunteer at the Samaritan Soup Kitchen.
Deaconess Jackie was a member of Temple Holiness Apostolic Church where she served on many auxiliaries. She was the Vice President of the Missionary Board, President of the Usher Board, Vice President of the Pastor's Aide, Assistant Church Secretary, Assistant Superintendent of Sunday School, and Treasurer of the Deacon Board. Deaconess Jackie had a passion for singing. She was Vice President of the Youth and Young Adult Choir and a member of the Senior Choir. She assisted with the HYPU. She was a member of the Hymnal Choir of COGIJCA (Church of God In Jesus Christ Apostolic, Inc.). Deaconess Sullivan loved the Lord and her Church. She could be found helping at the church wherever there was a need: cooking, cleaning, gardening and counseling when needed.
Deaconess Jackie Sullivan leaves loved and cherished memories to her husband of 41 years, Bishop James R. Sullivan, Sr.; daughter, Tabatha (Mike) Jackson of Winston-Salem, NC; sons, James R. Sullivan, Jr. and Forrest R. Sullivan of Charlotte, NC, and Elliott L. Sullivan of the home; three grandchildren, Kamryn Gaither, Arianna Garvens-Sullivan and Alana Jackson all of Winston-Salem, NC; her parents, Forrest and Francina Smith; sisters, Gail Hines of High Point, NC, Lavon Smith and Melanie Bush (Benjamin) of Winston-Salem, NC; one brother, Martinez Smith of Winston-Salem, NC; three brothers-in-law, Dexter (Peggy), John (Sylvia) and Kenneth(Cynthia) Sullivan; sister-in-law, Bernese Sullivan-Cason; a special sister-in-law, Peggy Sullivan; a special Godmother, Earnestine Horne; and a host of loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Saturday, February 1, 2014 at Temple Holiness Apostolic Church with Bishop Ernest Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 12noon on Saturday at the Church.
