Jacqueline McCoy January was born on December 21, 1939 to the late Birden and Lovie McCoy in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She departed this life at her home surrounded by loved ones on Saturday March 23, 2024 after an extended illness.
Jackie, as she was called, was born and raised in Winston Salem. She graduated from Carver Consolidated School in the class of 1958. As a child she was energetic and adventurous. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, sewing, and having fun with her brothers and sisters. After high school, Jackie married and later moved to the Washington, DC area where she became the proud mother of 3 beautiful children.
Jackie will always be remembered as a dynamic and determined woman. She graduated from the University of the District of Columbia after dedicating 30 years to raising her family. She worked for many years at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Later, she transferred to the National Institute of Health where she retired after 35 years of federal service. Jackie was a devout Christian who enjoyed serving others. She loved the Lord and her church.
While in the DC area she was a member of Gethsemane United Methodist Church where she was involved in many ministries, i.e. the United Methodist Women (United Women of Faith), chancellor choir, senior liturgical dancers, community service, and she enjoyed attending the many retreats held by the Church throughout the years.
After retiring, Jackie moved back to Winston Salem with her late husband James January. She was excited about returning to her family's home church Saint's Home United Methodist. She became involved in many of the ministries there as well, such as the choir, serving the homeless, singing in the community choir, volunteering in community services, and holiday caroling just to name a few.
In 2015, Jackie authored a book, Memoirs of Mother Love, in memory of her Mom and Dad, dedicated to her loved ones, and her interest as a family historian. Jackie lived a full and wonderful life working on sewing projects, tending to her garden, and cooking delicious meals for her nearest and dearest.
