Obituary

Iola "Ola" Davis Scott, 96, passed away peacefully in her home following the Easter holiday, just a week before her 97th birthday.

Ola, as she put it, was "born in Marion County, South Carolina and raised up in Robeson County, North Carolina." She was born as the youngest daughter to the late Joe and Emma Davis and was one of their ten children. She is preceded in death by her parents, who were both born in the late 1800s, her brothers Joseph, Arthur, Fred, Harry, Heyward and Robert and her sisters Pearline, Ellouise and Mary.

The family lived on a farm in Orrum, North Carolina where they picked cotton, worked in tobacco and the cornfields and grew corn, sweet potatoes and peanuts. In the wintertime, she said they would quilt which she did not like. As she put it, "I ain't got no patience for sewing."

Her mother passed away in 1945. She left "the country" in 1947 and moved to Wilmington, NC where she worked at the Chinese Laundry. Ola left Wilmington in 1955 and came to Winston-Salem where she lived until her passing. She worked in service as a housekeeper in people's private homes including the Peterson family.

In 1986, she met the Clark family when she worked at Rawley & Apperson. She worked for the Robert and Debbie Clark family for almost 40 years and at Rawley & Apperson. until 1997. She became a member of the Clark family. As she put it, "You all adopted me. All my people passed away but God give me some more."

Above all, she deeply loved her "babies": Ross, Wes and Kathryn. She made it her mission that they were "raised right" and filled every day with joy, stories and laughter. She attended plays, recitals and high school graduations and carried a fierce pride for who they grew up to become and all that they accomplished. She loved all her Clarks: John and Peggy, Robert and Debbie, Walton and Deedy, Dev, Anna plus Sarah, Melissa, Walton Jr., John III and Patricia. She loved meeting the next generation of Clarks including her "little angels" Frances and Blythe, Nell, Mae, Marion, Chandler, Mellie, Ruby, and Willa.

Over the years, she developed a close friendship with "Grandma" Peggy Clark, who was just one year older than her and grew up in Kingstree, SC, which was only a short distance from where Ola was born. They shared a love for low country South Carolina and Southern food. Every year, Ola looked forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas and going on the annual family beach trip.

Ola was a woman of profound faith. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Winston-Salem for many years. She prayed for anyone in need and shared her faith with all. She was also a funny and joyous person with a penchant for turning a phrase. If she had a lot of work to do, it was "hog killing season." If something she ate was tasty, it "was talking back to" her. If the dogs were barking too much, it was "hush your fuss!" If someone said something particularly true or that resonated with her, she would follow it with "Amen!"

She is survived by her many Clarks including Robert and Debbie, Ross (Chris), Wesley (Kariann), and Kathryn (Keaton) as well as by her extended Clark family of Walton (Deedy), Dev (Sheila), Anna (Dave), Sarah (Kenny), Melissa (Michael), Walton Jr. (Lynsey), John III (Calvin), and Patricia; and her "grandbabies." She is also survived by Hunter Peterson, Jamie Peterson Bender, and Jason Peterson, plus her long-time friends Kathryn Miller, Delores M. Scales, and William Murphy.

As she leaves this world to go home, she would want all her family and friends, especially Ross, Wes and Kathryn, along with everyone who knew her to remember the funny stories she had, the way she changed their lives and above all how to be faithful and love God as much as she did every day. As she often said, "You never know what the next day gonna bring. We just have to pray."

Graveside services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, April 18, 2026 in Woodland Cemetery, 3123 Indiana Ave, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
