Obituary

Mrs. Imogene McKnight Wyatt, 74, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at Forsyth Medical Center . She was born October 11, 1933 in Winston-Salem , NC to Robert L. McKnight and Hester B. Ridgill McKnight. Mrs. Wyatt was educated in the Winston-Salem public school system and graduated from Atkins High School in 1951. After high school se attended Winston-Salem Teachers College (WSSU) where she was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. and in 1954 was voted Miss Omega Psi Phi. She graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers College in 1955 with honors and began her illustrious career as a teacher for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Her further studies included graduate course work at the University of California at Los Angeles and Appalachian State University.

She worked as a teacher and reading coordinator for over forty years for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system before retiring in 1977 after a long and distinguished career. She truly love teaching and working with children. After a short period of time she came out of retirement and continued her teaching excellence at North Hills Elementary School as a part-time retired teacher. On May 20, 2006 she was recognized as a DISTINGUISHED EDUCATOR by the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. Beta Lambda Chapter-Winston-Salem , NC . She continued her teaching position at North Hills Elementary School right up until the time of her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Jerome L. McKnight, Castine McKnight, Robert L. McKnight Jr., and Roland O. McKnight. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of fifty years, Louis L. Wyatt; two loving sons, Brian K. Wyatt and Derek M. Wyatt of Winston-Salem, NC; two sisters Thomasina McKnight (Willis) Johnson of Winston-Salem, NC and Millison M. McKnight (Spencer) McCurry of Chatsworth, CA; one brother William M. (Carolyn) McKnight of Vans Nuys, CA; five nieces, Debra F. McKnight of Chatsworth, CA, Merilla C. McCurry Scott of Northridge, CA, Sharon E. Wyatt Rodriguez of Old Bridge, NJ, Katrina R. McKnight of Northridge, CA, and Erika L. Johnson Brooks, of Encino, CA; three nephews, Jerome L. McKnight Jr. of Winston-Salem, NC, William M. McKnight Jr. of Las Vegas, NE, and Eric L. Johnson of Loganville, GA; sister-in-law, Queen E. McKnight of Winston-Salem, NC and a host of relatives, friends, and students.

Mrs. Imogene McKnight Wyatt will be remembered as a devoted Wife and Mother, a loving daughter, a caring sister, a good friend, and dedicated educator. She will be greatly missed by all those who had the good fortune to know this beautiful, loving, caring, giving, and extraordinary woman.

Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm, Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Internment will follow at Piedmont Memorial Gardens . Family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:00pm at the Chapel.
