Ian Justin Smith was called to eternal rest and peace on May 6, 2008. He was born on February 9, 1984 in Winston-Salem, NC to the late Charles Albert Smith and Deborah Simmons Smith.
He grew up embraced in the biblical teaching at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, N.C. He participated in the youth program and enjoyed participating in church activities until he left for college.
He graduated from Parkland High School in Winston-Salem, N.C. While in attendance there, he focused on maintaining his grades so that he could attend college. Ian was well known for his football ability at Parkland High School. He was an awesome defensive tackle, which helped his team win the 2001 State Football Championship. He was a wrestler and also participated in Track and Field where he threw the shot put.
In 2002, he graduated from Parkland High School and was accepted into Fayetteville State University where he majored in Criminal Justice. He received a football scholarship and continued to play defensive tackle on the Fayetteville State football team. In 2004 he helped the Fayetteville State Broncos achieve the CIAA Championship.
From high school until Ian's death, he loved working in the group home settings. Throughout this time, he was affiliated with Pearce and Associates, Guardian Angel and Evergreen Rehabilitation Center.
Ian leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Tandra T. Smith of Fayetteville, NC; his devoted mother; six children, Jada, Destiny, Justin, Ladrius, Ebony, and Corinthian; one brother, Joshua, of the home; four aunts, Brenda Smith and Deborah (Terence) Johnson, both of Wilmington, NC, Karen (Melvin) Lewis of Okinawa, Japan and Bernice (James) Wells of Columbia, SC; eleven uncles, Carl Simmons, Henry L. Simmons, Jr., both of Winston-Salem, NC, Christopher (Deborah), Durham, NC, Kenneth (Barbara), Marietta, Georgia, Gregory, Michael (Cherry), Jimmy, Stevie (Martha), Daryl (Missy), all of Wilmington, NC, Otto Smith, Columbia, SC, Larry Smith, Florence, SC; a host of cousins, extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00pm, Monday May 12, 2008 at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Anderson Hicks officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Family visitation will be held from 2:00pm until 3:00pm on Monday at the Church.
