Howard Magager Mebane, Sr. was born on July 31, 1948 in Alamance County and passed on April 11, 2011 in Winston-Salem, NC.
Mr. Mebane graduated from high school in Alamance County and went on to Winston-Salem State University, where he received his bachelor's degree. He also received a Master's degree from UNC-Asheville and a Master nuclear electrician certification from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.
After teaching for many years in the Norfolk public, Mr. Mebane finished his career as a nuclear electrician at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard working for General Dynamics and NASA.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah Enoch Bethel and William Mebane, Sr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Phyllis Powell Mebane; his daughters, Tameka L. Mebane of Winston-Salem, NC and Phyllis Powell of Washington DC; sons, Keith E. Powell of Concord, CA and Howard M. Mebane II of Baltimore, MD; sisters, Selena M. Hunter (John), Phelena M. Hughes, and Brenda M. Tapp; brothers, William Mebane, Jr. and Omega L. Mebane (Deidre); granddaughters, Asia B. Davis and Sydni R. Mebane; other relatives, Bettye E. Smith (Johnny), Mary L. Davis, and Michael A. Powell (Jackie); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, "adopted" children, and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Friday, April 15, 2011 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend James Fulwood of St. Mark Baptist Church officiating. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1pm on Friday at the funeral home.
