In the early morning hours on Tuesday, April 20, 2010, after an extended period of illness, Mrs. Helen Hampton Steele took God's hand when she heard him call, having found her peace she turned her back and left it all. She could not stay another day.
Born on February 14, 1930 in Kernersville, NC, Helen was the second oldest daughter of Adam Grant Hampton and Selena Jenkins Hampton. She lived her life and she did it her way. Her marriage to Thomas Steele, Sr. in 1948 produced two children, her beloved daughter, Cynthia Diane Steele who preceded her in death in 1991 and her surviving son, Thomas Steele, Jr. (Maybelle).
Mrs. Steele was preceded in death by her parents and her two oldest brothers, William and Claude Hampton.
She is survived by four loving grandchildren, Christopher A. Jordan, Latonia S. Bilal of Charlotte, NC, Krishma C. Steele of Los Angeles, CA, and Louis J. Steele who provided care for her during her period of illness; 6 great-grandchildren; one brother, Melvin Hampton; three sisters, Tecora (Woodrow Sr.) Haney, Deloris Robb of Washington, DC., and Carolyn Whitehead of Chicago, Il.; a very special and devoted caregiver, Latisha Pettigrew; a host of devoted nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:30am Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Second Calvary Baptist Church with Reverend Donald Stowe officiating. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory Cemetery, Walkertown, NC. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services from 11am until 11:30am on Saturday at the church. The funeral procession will assemble and leave from the home of Mrs. Haney at 3742 Appomattox Drive W-S, NC 27106.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Second Calvary Baptist Church, The American Diabetes Assoc., American Cancer Assoc. or Trans-Aid.
