Mrs. Helen Thompson Blackmon, affectionately known as “G Mama” by her great-grandchildren, was born on January 31, 1925, in Lancaster, South Carolina, to the late Selvyn Thompson and Lucinda Peay Thompson. Blessed with a long and meaningful life of 101 years, she accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Mount Carmel AME Zion Church in Lancaster, South Carolina. After an extended illness, she peacefully gained her heavenly wings on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

Mrs. Blackmon married Marvin L. Blackmon, Sr. and later moved to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where she joined Hanes Memorial CME Church. She served faithfully for many years as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Stewardess Board, and Secretary of the Board of Christian Education. She was also a member of the Celestial Voices choir and an original member of the Hanes Creative Club.

Mrs. Blackmon earned a diploma in Stenography from Russell Business College. She worked as a legal secretary for Attorney Curtis Todd and retired after twenty-five years of dedicated service. In addition, she served as a Notary Public for twenty years.

Mrs. Blackmon was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Marvin L. Blackmon Sr.; and her son, Michael Blackmon.

Leaving to cherish her memory are her son, Marvin L. (Naomi) Blackmon Jr., her caregivers who provided care and support throughout her extended illness. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Monica Johnson (Marques) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Marlon Blackmon of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; her great-grandchildren, Lauren, Ava, and Zoe Johnson of Charlotte, North Carolina; her sisters, Mary A. Stewart, Pauline (Kelly) Benson, Rev. Reva (Dr. Bennie) Stinson, and Catherine Coffey, all of Lancaster, South Carolina; her brother, Edgo (Sarah) Thompson of Lancaster, South Carolina; a special niece, Carolyn Henderson of the city; her devoted “Care Angel,” Deborah Smith of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; and a host of cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Monday, September 21, 2026 at Russell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00noon Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at Hanes Memorial CME Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:00noon on Tuesday at the Church.
