Deacon Hector Cox, Jr. was born to Hector Cox, Sr. and Jeanette Lyde Cox in Marlboro County, SC on March 6, 1931. He departed this earthly life on November 28, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Deacon Cox was educated in the public school system of Dillon County, SC. He enlisted into the US Army after school and served in the Korean Conflict and received an honorable discharge.
Deacon Cox moved to Winston-Salem, NC in 1959 where he met and married the love of his life, Ms. Edith Thomas. They were united in marriage for 45 years until her death in March 2011.
Deacon Cox was the owner of Cox and Evans Concrete Company for many years. He co-owned the business with his dear cousin, the late Samuel Evans.
Deacon Cox was a faithful and dedicated member of St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend JR Samuels for more than fifty years. He was a past-president of the Senior Usher Board. Before becoming an ordained deacon, he was a trustee and very active in the Sunday School Department. Deacon Cox was very instrumental in the building of the outdoor shelter and landscaping of the church. These are just a few of the many organizations he played a major part in.
Deacon Cox later moved his membership to New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Ronald Speas. He was a dedicated and faithful member until his health began to fail.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; sons, Hector Cox, III, Paul H., and Gilbert C. Thomas; and his sister, Catherine Ramsey.
He leaves to cherish fond memories of love his sons, Joseph (Vicki) Cox and Johnnie (Lynda) Coleman of the city; grandchildren, Cedric Thomas, Tiffany Baker, Tawanda Finney, Travis Cox, LaToya Mathews, and Jermey Hall of the city; five beautiful sisters, Mae Braddy, Katie Abrams, Barbara (Fred) Roberts of the city, Ann Radolph of Trenton, NJ, and Jessie (Bulter) of Latta, SC; a special part of the family, Dolly Toppins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 11:00am Saturday, December 9, 2017 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Ronald Speas officiating. Interment will follow in Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 10:00am until 11:00am on Saturday at the Church.
