Dr. Hazel J. Harvey, 92, was born in Sanford, NC on December 27, 1929 to the late William and Ella Jackson. She gained her heavenly wings on Monday, December 5, 2022.
Hazel graduated from Lee County Training School in Sanford, NC. Upon graduating high school, she attended North Carolina Central University majoring in English. She moved to Winston-Salem and worked for the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools teaching at Paisley High School and Atkins High School. Hazel worked as an English Professor, Head of the English Department, and Academic Dean at Winston-Salem State University.
Hazel was a devoted wife to her late husband, Samuel D. Harvey.
After retiring she became a realtor at Hubbard Realty. Hazel volunteered at Ashley Elementary School helping to foster a love of reading with students. She was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her hobbies included reading, playing pinochle, flowers, and puppies. She could often be found at family gatherings where nieces and nephews lovingly called her Aunt Weze.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ella Jackson; husband, Samuel Harvey; sisters, Thelma Isles, Eula Jones, and Doris Fox; brothers, James C. Jackson, Walter F. Jackson, Robert E. Jackson and William A. Jackson; and her stepdaughter, Brenda.
She leaves to cherish her memory a stepson, Samuel D. Harvey, Jr. of Georgia; devoted nieces, Janice Tuck (William), Alisha Tuck-Thompson (Jamal) of Winston-Salem, NC, Kristal Tuck, Cheryl Dryer (Gregory) and Debra McClain (Michael) all of Charlotte, NC; and a dedicated nephew, Branden Tuck. Her memory and heartfelt support will be cherished by each of her nieces and nephews. Hazel will be dearly missed and remembered by a large host of family and friends.
A viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, December 11, 2022 at Russell Funeral Home.
Homegoing Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, December 12, 2022 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, Winston-Salem, NC. The family visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the Chapel.
