Harrison Eugene Lash, affectionately known as "Gene," was born on October 24, 1935, to the late Oliver Eugene Lash and Mable Golden Lash. He peacefully departed this life on January 24, 2026, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, surrounded by the love of his nieces and nephews.
Gene was educated in the Stokes County School system. As a young adult, he relocated to the Bronx, New York, where he built his life and career alongside his beloved wife, Geraldine. He retired from the City of New York Parks and Recreation after many years of dedicated service, serving in a supervisory role.
Gene and Geraldine shared a love for travel and adventure. Together, they explored the world, visiting destinations such as Hawaii and Japan. Before their later years, they often spent summers in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, with family. During those visits, Gene faithfully attended St. Paul United Methodist Church under the spiritual leadership of Pastor Donald Jenkins.
Following a mild stroke that left him partially blind in one eye, Gene continued to live with resilience and grace. After the passing of his wife in March 2025, he moved permanently to Winston-Salem to be closer to family, where he was lovingly cared for during his final months.
In his leisure time, Gene enjoyed all genres of music, with a special love for spirituals and gospel. He could often be found listening to Gunsmoke, and court television shows, and cheering for his favorite New York sports teams—the New York Giants, Yankees, Mets, Knicks, and Nets. Most of all, he treasured time spent with his family, especially his nieces, nephews, and the many children and grandchildren he proudly claimed as his own. He continued attending St. Paul United Methodist Church until his health no longer allowed.
Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine Brown Lash; his son, Michael Hall; his parents; three sisters, Ruth Lash, Patricia Lash Brown-Kinnard, and Serena Lash Burris; and two brothers, John Lash and Connell Lash.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Sharmaine (Richard) Pinnekins of Houston, Texas, and Diane Hall of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; four sons, Stacey Gee of Bronx, New York, and Larry Hall, Donnell Hall, and Harold Hall, all of Winston-Salem; and a devoted granddaughter, LaToya Hall.
During his time in Winston-Salem, Gene was lovingly cared for by his devoted nieces and nephews: Jesse (Phyllis) Brown of Kernersville, North Carolina; Tanja (Darryl) Smith, Tessie (Warren) Glenn, and Sherry (Keith) Easter, all of Winston-Salem; and Shareka and Tameka Brown, with whom he resided. He was also blessed with a large extended family of great nieces and nephews: Jay Terry (Christina), Jesse (Tiffany), Jarvey II, LaQuasha, Darryl (DJ) Jr., LaTina, Jessica, Rodney, and Laura; and great-great nieces and nephews Kari, Talan, Londyn, Jayla, Arielle, Darvell, Reagan, Skylar, Bryant ("Lil B"), Lyric, Zariah, and Marleey, all of whom lovingly called him "Papa Gene."
Gene was further supported by his devoted caregivers—Nephew Warren Glenn, Vannois Jefferson, Jr., and Robette Davis—who provided exceptional care in his home. They were more than caregivers; they were family.
The legacy of Harrison Eugene Lash will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him, from the Bronx, New York, to Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
