Following high school graduation, she enrolled at Winston-Salem Teachers College and earned a BS degree in Elementary Education. In 1960, she began her stellar career as an educator in Portsmouth, Virginia.  She returned to her home state of North Carolina to Rowan County where she taught for 2 years before making her way back home to Winston-Salem where she touched the lives of countless children for 28 years in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System before her retirement.

Her early Christian education began at St. Benedict The Moor Catholic Church. She later joined Mount Zion Baptist Church under the pastorate of the late Reverend Dr. Kelly O. P. Goodwin. She was a faithful member of Mount Zion where she was a dedicated usher, Mirriam Missionary Group member and a leader of the Hattie File Club.

Gwendolyn Harper Jones married her sweetheart, Robert J. Wynn Sr., in 1961. Their union was blessed with two children. The loving couple celebrated 62 years of marriage this year.
