Gwendolyn Delores Witherspoon Watts, also known as "Gwen", was born November 25, 1942 in Winston-Salem, NC to Plumie H. Witherspoon and David I. Witherspoon, Sr. Life here on earth for her ended September 28, 2019 after a long period of illness.
She lived in Winston-Salem most of her life, attending the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. It was at Atkins High School where she met the love of her life, Robert Watts. They were married in August 1988 and from that union their only child was conceived.
Gwen was a member of Hanes Memorial CME Church and when she was physically able, she worked in the church as the Pastor's Aide Board President, Senior Usher Board, Creative Club, and on the kitchen staff.
Gwen had a great love for painting, puzzle books, plants, and the telephone. She could talk for hours.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Gwen was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Witherspoon; and her brothers, David, Jr., William, and Thurmond Witherspoon.
Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Rosalla Valeria Witherspoon; grandsons, Derrick and Lamarr Witherspoon; great-granddaughter, Rakeisha Witherspoon; great-grandsons, Derrick Frazier and Jhore Witherspoon; great-great-grandson, Owen Walker; sisters, Audrey Witherspoon, Phyllis Witherspoon, and Virginia Witherspoon; brother, Nathan Witherspoon; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Thursday, October 3, 2019 at Hanes Memorial CME Church with Reverend Veldon Meredith officiating. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Thursday at the Church.
Burial will be held at 10:00am Monday, October 7, 2019 in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC.
