GWENDOLYN DELORES OLIVER-REID was born in Danville, VA on June 16, 1949 to the late Fletcher Linzy Oliver, Sr. and Bernyce Pinchback Oliver. She departed this life at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center on Monday September 29, 2008 at 1:30 AM.
Gwen joined Trinity Baptist Church in Danville, VA at an early age. She served the church while living in Danville as a member of the Junior Choir as well as secretary of the Sunday School.
Gwen was educated in the Danville Public School System and graduated from Winston-Salem State University. During her matriculation at Winston-Salem State University, she became a member of Swing Phi Swing Social Fellowship, Inc. After graduation, Gwen moved to New York and worked for New York Bell Telephone Company. Later she worked for New York State in the Alien Certification Department.
Gwen married Vonnie Reid on March 22, 1986 and to their union two daughters was born. In 1997, Gwen retired from employment with the State of New York and moved to Winston-Salem, NC.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Fletcher Oliver, Jr.
Gwen leaves to hold in memory, a devoted husband, Vonnie Reid of Winston-Salem, NC, two loving daughters, Phaedra Reid of Durham, NC and Alecktra Reid of Charlotte, NC, one dear brother, Jerry Oliver of Tacoma Park, MD, one devoted sister, Lavetrice Oliver of Winston-Salem, NC, one loving sister-in-law, Grace Oliver of Danville, VA. She also leaves behind two nephews, four nieces, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Noon on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at Russell Funeral Home Chapel. The family visitation will be held from 11:00 am until Noon at the Chapel.
